Introduction to Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics (CICC) Trust

CICC Trust is a clerical organization that promotes peace, security and development in Kenya through intra and interreligious dialogue and action.

It comprises of religious institutions from African traditional Religion, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.

CICC trust has over two decades of experience in Peacebuilding, Child Protection, Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Public Participation and Governance.

Our History

Special Events of CICC History

1997 - CICC Trust was formed in response to the emergence of political violence and extremism which increasingly affected the Kenyan Coast since the violent 1992 elections. CICC Trust was founded by religious leaders from African Traditional Religion, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. During this time, CICC Trust operated as network of organizations under the banner of Coast Peace Initiative (CPI) and provided relief support and comfort for affected persons. It was at this time that CPI realized that the communities trusted clerics and religious institutions to intervene and address conflicts.

1997- 2000

2001 - The tragic event of 9/11 reinforced the need for the organization's conflict transformation strategies; interreligious dialogue and action. This event heightened tensions between Muslims and Christians at the Coast thus calling for intense engagements among religious leaders, clerics and faith communities, it is during this time that CIC Trust was officially formed through the eight member organizations: The Catholic Church, Council of Imams & Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), Hindu Council of Kenya (HCK), and the African Traditional Religions (ATRs). During this period, CICC started attracting funds from various partners.

2001-2005

2005 - CICC Trust intensified engagements in the community towards understanding and acceptance of the religious, ethnic and political diversity. During this period, county and sub county committees comprising of religious leaders and clerics formed across the six counties of the Coast Region.

2005-2007

2008 - CICC Trust was officially registered as Trust.

2008

2008 - CICC Trust has been undertaking immense work in the Coast region of Kenya evolving around Child protection, Interreligious Dialogue, Peacebuilding, Preventing Violent extremism, Election Security, Research.

2008 - Date

2017 - CICC Trust formed the Women Desk and Youth Desk comprising of religious leaders and clerics who are women and youthful. This was done to complement the work undertaken by male religious leaders and clerics.
